Located in the North-Eastern corner of South Africa in the Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and North-West provinces, and spanning a total of 15,000km2 (~4M acres) across three permits (249, 250 & 251).
The permits allow H2Au 100% exclusive rights to carry out hydrogen exploration studies and were granted by the Minister for mineral resources and energy in 2024.
Over 5km of Transvaal meta-sediments overlying granite-greenstone terrains and intruded by the worldslargest ultramafic igneous intrusion (65,000km2).
Active tectonic fault systems (TML, Steelport, Wonderkop) provide deep migration pathways and trapping opportunities.
Incidences of up to 80% hydrogen in mine gas reports.
In 2023 over 80% of South Africa’s energy came from unreliable, carbon intensive coal fired power stations. Project Spinifex lies within an area responsible for over 50% of South Africa’s energy consumption key and industries such as mining, cement and steel are often unable to develop due to a lack of power.
In 2021 the department of Science and Innovation S.A proposed a hydrogen valley centred around Mogalakwena, Johannesburg and Durban hubs. These three hubs are forecast to have between 90-180Kt H2 demand every year. Project spinifex lies between two of these hubs and could readily supply domestic hydrogen and power to the industries needing to decarbonise.
